It is best to feed your family a whole foods diet. This simply means that you are using natural fruits, vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and healthful meats in your daily meals. Eliminate the use of refined and processed foods. There are negative consequences to eating these foods.
It may not be evident when you start eating them, but a long term diet of non-quality food will have health consequences. Why would you want to feed you family poor quality food? It may not be possible for you to purchase all organic foods due to the expense, but there are some foods that are best to be purchased as organic and others that it is not as important that they are organic. For example, commercial dairy can contain hormones and chemicals that are not found in organic dairy. Some fruits such as berries are best purchased organic, as the commercial ones contain higher levels of pesticides than for example fruits with thick skins and peels, such as bananas or melons.
Shop around to find the healthiest of foods. You may want to go to your local health food store or to farmers markets. Find out how your food is being grown, and buy locally grown food to support the food industry in your community. Healthy eating is important for people of any age, but especially developing children. Their bodies are often more sensitive to chemical and processed food additives. Some of the common problems seen in children today such as ADHD are proven to be related to poor eating and excess sugar consumption. Your children will learn from your example on how to eat healthfully. Eliminate poor quality foods from the home and replace them with healthful alternatives.
Over time, people learn to adapt to a healthful diet and eventually will not miss the unhealthful foods that they were consuming previously. What we eat is a choice. Be aware that dietary choices have a significant impact on our health, more than any other factor. Have fun experimenting with the preparation of new healthful foods which you have not tried before. The whole family can share in the learning of and eating enjoyment of healthy foods.
