History of Breast Cancer


The old Egyptians initially noticed breast cancer and made a record of the ailment as ulcers and tumors that affect the breast. They came up with a conclusion that this condition did not have a precise cure and thus the only treatment option available would be the use of the fire drill to perform the cauterization procedure. The doctors started comprehending the circulatory system of the humans in the 17thCentury. They were able to come up with a link between the lymph nodes located in the armpits and breast cancer. In the mid of the 17thand the 18thcenturies there were two French surgeons by the names of Bell Benjamin and Petit Jean who were able to eliminate the first lymph nodes, muscles of the chest and the breast tissue in a bid to save life.

By the year 1880, William Halsted was performing mastectomies on the breast cancer patients. This procedure was acknowledged and is referred to as the Halsted Radical Mastectomy and it has played  big role in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer affects the breast tissues and is found in both sexes though it is predominant in the women. Statistics have proved that 1% of the deaths in the world is caused by breast cancer. It is important to point out the fact that breast cancer cases are highest in number in the US with the ratio being one out of every eight women has chances of developing cancer. Due t the lifestyle that people have adopted today, there has been and upsurge of the number of breast cancer cases in the world today.

The breast comprises of tissues that are identical in both the men and the women. It is thus worth pointing out that breast cancer also affects men but in very low percentages. However, even though the men are at much lower risk of contracting breast cancer, they have prostrate cancer to deal with. The most common treatment for the breast cancer in males is mastectomy since the breast tissue is in one position directly behind the nipple.

The good news is that most of the breast cancer signs and symptoms tend to display negative results. Most of these signs end up being other ailments that affect the breasts. However, this should not sound comforting at all and thus any sign that is noticed should be addressed as soon as possible. In some cases women have developed lumps that have scared them to death but the results have proved that they are not malignant. The most recommended approach of dealing with breast cancer is to seek treatment as early as possible.
